TAC reviews proposed Statewide Transportation Improvement Program

ST. JAMES­—The Transportation Advisory Committee (TAC) reviewed a draft of the Statewide Transportation Improvement Program (STIP) plan at its meeting on June 8 at Meramec Regional Planning Commission (MRPC), specifically looking at projects in the eight-county Meramec Region. The STIP outlines the highway and bridge construction projects to be completed by the Missouri Department of Transportation (MoDOT) scheduled from 2018 to 2022.

The STIP prepared annually, sets forth the specific construction projects MoDOT will undertake in the next five years. It covers highways and bridges, transit, aviation, rail, waterways, bicycle, pedestrian and other projects.

On average, Missouri drivers pay approximately $30 per month to fund the maintenance and improvements to the Missouri state transportation system. These funds come from fuel taxes and fees. Over the last 10 years, Missourians have invested in 4,661 projects totaling $12.6 billion. An estimated $4.45 billion is estimated to be available for projects over the next five years for improvements.

In the Meramec Region, 33 projects are listed to be included in the STIP.

In other business, the committee was:

  • Updated on revisions being made to the Meramec Regional Transportation Plan (RTP);
  • Heard reports from representatives from St. Robert, Phelps County and Washington County on transportation projects occurring in those areas using various grant programs; and
  • Heard an update that roadway accident fatalities are down slightly compared to the same time period last year.
