ST. JAMES—The Missouri Department of Public Safety announced the opening of the 2017 State Homeland Security Program (SHSP) grant application period. The application period is open until 5:00 p.m. May 12.

Funding is made available through the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). The Missouri Office of Homeland Security makes all funding opportunities available through WebGrants, (https://dpsgrants.dps.mo.gov/index.do) the Department of Public Safety’s online electronic portal. Applicants must designate their respective geographic area – regions A thru I – in Webgrants. Region I covers the counties of Crawford, Dent, Maries, Phelps, Pulaski and Laclede.

The 2017 SHSP supports core capabilities across the five mission areas of prevention, protection, mitigation, response and recovery based on allowable costs. Funding is provided for a range of things including preparedness activities, including planning, organization, equipment purchase and training exercises. Due to funding reductions, Region I focuses on maintaining current capabilities and improving interoperable communications.

State and local governments, as well as nongovernmental organizations, quasi-governmental organizations and nonprofit organizations are eligible to apply.

The Meramec Regional Planning Commission (MRPC) provides administration for the Region I Homeland Security Oversight Committee (HSOC). For more information on how to apply, contact Anne Freand with MRPC at 573-265-2993 or by email at afreand@meramecregion.org.

Formed in 1969, MRPC is a voluntary council of governments serving Crawford, Dent, Gasconade, Maries, Osage, Phelps, Pulaski and Washington counties and their respective cities. A professional staff of 25, directed by the MRPC board, offers technical assistance and services, such as grant preparation and administration, housing assistance, transportation planning, environmental planning, ordinance codification, business loans and other services to member communities.
