  1. JAMES—The Meramec Regional Planning Commission, Phelps County Public Housing Agency (PHA) will host a free workshop in St. James on Sept. 17.

The “Homemade” workshop will be held from 1 to 3 p.m. at the Meramec Regional Panning Commission (MRPC) office, 4 Industrial Dr., St. James.

Phelps County PHA housing coordinator, Tammy Rigsby, will present “Homemade,” a workshop that teaches how to save funds by making their own laundry soap and cleaning supplies. Participants will leave with samples. Worshops are offered at no cost.

For questions or to RSVP, contact Linda Hollandsworth at 265-4200, ext. 132 or email lhollandsworth@meramecregion.org by Sept. 10 to ensure enough supplies are available.

Free training classes are a part of the MRPC and PHA’s efforts to help prepare families who are first-time homebuyers for homeownership and make them aware of the resources available to assist with homeownership. These workshops are a part of MRPC’s outreach efforts in partnership with senior citizen housing groups and the Federal Home Loan Bank of Des Moines, which assists with grant funds to renovate senior citizen housing complexes throughout the region.

Formed in 1969, MRPC is a voluntary council of governments serving Crawford, Dent, Gasconade, Maries, Osage, Phelps, Pulaski and Washington counties and their respective cities. A professional staff of 22, directed by the MRPC board, offers technical assistance and services, such as grant preparation and administration, housing assistance, transportation planning, environmental planning, ordinance codification, business loans and other services to member communities.

MRPC provides administration for the Phelps County PHA, which offers rental assistance to very low-income families in Crawford, Dent, Gasconade, Maries, Washington counties, and Phelps County, outside the city of Rolla.
