STEELVILLE—The residents of Steelville Homes, Inc. in Steelville, Mo. are awaiting the completion of a $525,000 rehabilitation project that has increased energy efficiency and modernized the complex. The 48 units, originally built in the 1970s by United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Rural Development, have been upgraded through funds provided by the Federal Home Loan Bank (FHLB) of Des Moines, Iowa and the Steelville Homes, Inc. board of directors.
The Steelville Homes board secured a $375,064 grant from FHLB-DM and in November 2009 contributed $150,000 of its own funding. Board President Bill Coffman said he was looking forward to the outcome of the renovations. “The goal is to make our homes energy-efficient and to keep the rent low for our residents,” Coffman said. Renovations to the units began in spring 2011 and are expected to be completed this fall. The rehabilitation work to the one-bedroom homes include HVAC upgrades, new windows and doors, electric upgrades, exterior lighting improvements, bathroom remodeling, kitchen cabinet replacement, new floor coverings, new roofs and sidewalk replacement. The Meramec Regional Planning Commission (MRPC) wrote the grant application and is providing construction management and inspections for the project. Chuck Cantrell, housing inspector with MRPC, noted the HVAC upgrades are complete, all roofing and windows, exterior lighting and interior electric projects are complete, and 50 percent of the doors have been replaced. "Right now, they are working on the showers, kitchens and floors," Cantrell said. Contractors for the project include: Aubertin Construction of Fredericktown, Mo., CASCO Electric of Beaufort, Mo., ECS Electrical Contracting & Signs of Salem, Mo., JD Exteriors of Linn, Mo., Matt's Home Services of Cuba, Mo., Mid Missouri Kitchen and Bath of Rolla, Mo., Midyett Construction of Steelville, Mo. and Pride Master, Inc. of Chesterfield, Mo.
