Phelps County Public Housing Agency to close housing waiting list Dec. 29
ST. JAMES—The Phelps County Public Housing Agency (PHA) is closing its housing waiting list, effective 4 p.m. Dec. 29, 2011, announced Linda Hollandsworth, housing manager. Until further notice, no new applications will be accepted at the St. James office or Potosi satellite office.
Housing assistance payments (HAP) funds have decreased consistently over the years because of budget reductions from the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD). Additionally, individual unit costs of housing a family have increased as well.
“Phelps County PHA, for sometime now, has been using reserve funds to serve the same number of families despite less money and higher costs,” said Hollandsworth. “We can no longer do that as our reserve funds are nearly depleted. We will now have to work with our annual allocation.”
The Phelps County PHA currently has over 600 families on the waiting list and needs to reduce the number of units subsidized because of funding limitations. Closing the waiting list will give the PHA the opportunity to serve its current waiting list applicants with the limited funds available.
When the PHA reopens its waiting list, it will advertise with a public notice at least 10 business days prior to the date applications will first be accepted.
The Phelps County PHA, located inside the office of the Meramec Regional Planning Commission at 4 Industrial Drive in St. James, offers rental assistance to very low-income families in Crawford, Dent, Gasconade, Maries, Washington counties, and Phelps County, outside the city of Rolla.
Persons needing more information on the Phelps County PHA may call (573) 265-4200. The office will be closed on Dec. 26 and Jan. 2 for holidays.
