Bourbon First Graders Tour Rolla Recycling Center
Learn about solid waste issues
Sixty first graders from Bourbon Elementary School along with their teacher, Becky Turner, and 20 parents recently toured the Rolla Recycling Center on April 29. The tour was funded by the Ozark Rivers Solid Waste Management District through a USDA Awareness to Action grant. The program strives to educate students and adults about solid waste issues and asks them to take action to address environmental issues, like illegal dumping.
Bourbon Elementary School has a recycling program that was started by Turner, who was the recipient of an ORSWMD award in 2009. Recyclables from Bourbon school are transported to the Rolla Recycling Center so students were able to see how their recyclables are processed. In addition to overseeing the school recycling program, Turner also provides information and advice to others school who are interested in offering a recycling program. The local solid waste district still has funds to assist with educational tours for schools. For more information, contact MRPC at 573-265-2993 or email nongluk@meramecregion.org.
Marcia Mayo of the Rolla Recycling Center discusses recycling with Bourbon first grade students and their parents on a tour of the facility. Baled plastics can be seen in the background.
