Solid Waste District Distributes Alcoa Recycling Bins to Eight Schools

ST. JAMES— The Ozark Rivers Solid Waste Management District has distributed some 85 paper recycling bins to schools in the seven-county district. The bins were made available to the solid waste district for the past two years by the Missouri Recycling Association through a grant from Alcoa, In.

Letters were sent to schools in Crawford, Dent, Gasconade, Maries, Phelps, Pulaski and Washington counties and were distributed on a first-come, first-served basis.

“The only requirement is that the recipient track the volume of materials recycled with the bins and provide a report at the end of the year,” said Tammy Snodgrass, environmental programs manager for Meramec Regional Planning Commission. MRPC serves as the program administrator for the Ozark Rivers District.

Schools receiving bins over the past two years include Waynesville Schools, St. Joachim School, Kingston K-14, Steelville Middle School, Hermann High School, Cuba High School, Gasconade County R-2 Schools-Owensville and Dent-Phelps R-3 at Edgar Springs.

Any schools wishing to receive recycling bins in the future are encouraged to contact Snodgrass.

“We now have a waiting list for bins, so if you are interested, please contact us,” she explained. “With the waiting list, we will be able to request enough bins to accommodate interested schools the next time the bins come available.”

The Ozark Rivers District includes Crawford, Dent, Gasconade, Maries, Phelps, Pulaski and Washington counties and their respective cities with populations of 500 or more. Scott Murrell of Fort Leonard Wood serves as chairman. The district's strategy for solid waste reduction, which has been individually adopted by all member governments and approved by the Missouri Department of Natural Resources, involves intense education and increased recycling efforts in member counties and cities.

Those wishing to request bins or needing more information on recycling can contact Snodgrass at 573-265-2993 or by email at tsnodgrass@meramecregion.org.
