JAMES—The Region I Homeland Security Oversight Committee is now accepting homeland security grant requests for narrowband portable radios. The grant program is open to fire departments, emergency medical services, public health, law enforcement and emergency management agencies in Crawford, Dent, Maries, Phelps, Pulaski and Laclede counties. So far, the Region I HSOC has awarded 75 radios to agencies, based on need. “After awarding radios based on our needs survey, we still have radios left and we know that there are some organizations that failed to fill out the survey,” explained Amy McMillen, environmental programs specialist. Meramec Regional Planning Commission, who serves as the HSOC’s administrative entity and fiscal agent, is coordinating the effort. “The interoperability committee decided to take grant applications to see what kind of requests they received,” McMillen added. The two-page application form is available on-line at www. meramecregion.org and is located under Grant Alerts. Jurisdictions needing additional information may contact McMillen at amcmillen@meramecregion.org or by ph at 573-265-2993. Deadline for applications is 5 p.m. Sept. 23, 2008. If an agency is awarded narrowband, P-25 compliant radios, they must decommission an equal number of wideband radios, McMillen said. |
