MRPC ELECTS OFFICERS
Robert Reed of Washington County re-elected chairman


ST. JAMES—Washington County Presiding Commissioner Robert "Bob" Reed was reelected chairman of the  Meramec Regional Planning Commission during the board's regular meeting May 10  in St. James.

All officers were eligible for a second term. Rolla business person Laura Antolak was re-elected vice president. She is the MRPC at-large commissioner for small business. Osage County Presiding Commissioner Russell Scheulen will serve a second term as secretary. Salem Mayor Gary Brown will serve another year as treasurer.

Jesse Jarvis, at-large commissioner for education, was re-elected at-large representative to the executive board. Four at-large positions were elected this year. Earl Brown of Dent County will continue to serve as commissioner for people with disabilities; Peter Herrington of Sullivan will continue to represent labor. Marcus Maggard of Salem will serve another three-year term as commissioner for tourism and Franky Todd of Crawford County will continue to represent seniors on the board.

In other business, the board:

  • Approved the appointments of Dennis Purcell of Dent County and Mark Weidinger of Maries County to the Meramec Regional Development Corporation board and Chris Heard of Pulaski County and J.D. Lester of Gasconade County to the MRPC Transportation Advisory Committee.

  • Reviewed and approved the scope of work for MRPC's planning contract with the Missouri Department of Transportation;

  • Approved the Transportation Advisory Committee's recommendations on District 9 enhancement grants. After hearing presentations, the TAC ranked local governments projects with Crocker sidewalk improvements being the top vote-getter, followed by Waynesville's Highway 17 sidewalks plan, Potosi/Washington County town square improvements, Cuba's Phase 3 trail project, Rolla's Coventry Trail project, St. Robert sidewalk project and Pulaski County's Devil's Elbow bridge preservation project. MRPC staff will assist MoDOT District 9 in its selection of enhancement projects. Some $1.3 million is available for District 9 enhancement projects. The city of Hermann is also applying for enhancement funds to develop sidewalks between its schools. That project is the only one from the Meramec Region in the District 5 competition.

  • Learned that MRPC's Operations Committee began its review of the 2007-2008 proposed budget. Committee members will review the budget for a month, prior to recommending it for adoption in June, and

  • Approved an updated hour allocation policy, recommended by the External Relations Committee.

  • Formed in 1969, MRPC is a voluntary council of governments serving Crawford, Dent, Gasconade, Maries, Osage, Phelps, Pulaski and Washington counties and their respective cities. A professional staff of 24, directed by the MRPC board, offers technical assistance and services, such as grant preparation and administration, housing assistance, transportation planning, environmental planning, ordinance codification, business loans and other services to member communities.

The MRPC board will meet June14 at its office at 4 Industrial Drive in St. James. All meetings are open to the public.
